Website traffic but no leads: what to check first

Check the measurement, visitor intent, commercial pages and enquiry path before deciding what to change.

A traffic chart can improve while the sales team sees little change. I would first check who arrives, which page they use and whether the enquiry path works. Those checks distinguish a search problem from an offer or conversion problem.

First, confirm that enquiries are being recorded

Test the form, its acceptance response and the delivery route. Check phone and direct-email paths too. A confirmation-page visit is not an accepted submission, and an analytics event is not automatically a unique enquiry.

Compare the inbox or provider’s accepted records with the CRM. Record repeat submissions separately from the company so you can count both without conflating them. When attribution is missing, label it unknown.

Who is the traffic for?

Read the visible search queries and landing pages alongside the business offer. A supplier can attract consumers who want a single small purchase when the profitable work is a commercial project. A recruitment business can attract jobseekers when the acquisition objective is employer clients.

E-GMP’s case makes that audience distinction explicit. Total impressions alone would blend commercially different visitors. Search Console also does not reveal the exact query behind an individual enquiry.

Does the page help a buyer decide?

Check whether the landing page explains suitability, scope, price context and the next step. A relevant buyer may hesitate when specifications are missing, delivery coverage is unclear or every action demands a sales call.

At JS Wallmatrix, research identified product-specific price and installation page types. Eight of 24 recorded page-sourced enquiries came through long-tail variants. That shows a contribution from those page types; it does not prove that one-third of all enquiries came from organic search.

Use a real page-to-enquiry example from your business to decide what deserves attention. The JSW case explains its periods, overlapping cohorts and measurement limits.

Can a buyer complete the next step?

Try the site on a phone and with a keyboard. Enter a bare domain if the form asks for a website. Check errors, loading, acceptance and retry. Make the labels readable and give the buyer a direct contact route if submission fails.

Ask only for information needed to respond. A budget field, corporate-email restriction or mandatory call can prevent a suitable prospect from beginning a conversation. You can qualify scope and paid-work interest after a genuine enquiry.

Use the diagnosis to choose the work

  • Wrong audience: reconsider query coverage and the offer’s page focus.
  • Relevant audience, weak evaluation information: improve commercial content and evidence.
  • Relevant interest, broken enquiry path: fix and verify the conversion route.
  • Accepted enquiries, few suitable prospects: review targeting and qualification.
  • Qualified opportunities, few wins: investigate scope, price, proof and timing with the sales records.

Track visits, accepted enquiries, qualified leads, opportunities and collected revenue separately. Low counts over a short period are not a verdict on SEO; relevant visibility, elapsed time and sales outcomes need to be read together.

Strata’s B2B SEO programme connects those decisions to research, page improvements and technical implementation.

Unknown measurement stays unknown. A search click is not a qualified enquiry.

Record the source period and excluded enquiry types. Keep page contribution separate from acquisition channel. The break-even calculator can test whether additional qualified enquiries would cover an entered investment; it does not predict demand.
